Congratulations on your new baby! Thank you so much for allowing me the amazing and rewarding job of photographing your new little mini in his/her first few days of life. Newborns are my passion and I consider myself truly blessed to be around these little miracles so much.
I’ll be bringing a space heater to our session but ask that the room we will be shooting in to be at least 80 degrees. When the room is warm, baby will fall asleep and easier to be posed. Due to this, I come dressed for a warm few hours and suggest you do too!
If we're doing the photo session at your home, I’d also ask that we set up in a room without direct sunlight, but good window light is great. If you have questions about this, I’m happy to tour your home to find the room with the best light for shooting.
As a mom of two I remember the weeks following each of my births, the last thing I wanted to do was keep a clean house. Please don’t feel as though you need to pick up for me at all. If things need to be re-arranged or moved aside we can easily do this!
If you plan to have siblings photographed, I only ask that when they are not a part of the session to have them out of the room. We want to ensure a calm and peaceful environment for the star of the show!
Before the shoot, please feed baby 2-3 hours prior, and plan on feeding him/her as soon as you get to my home studio! Also, please do not let him/her sleep beforehand, instead try giving him/her a bath, let him/her kick with only a diaper, tickle his/her toes, and even let him/her fuss for a little bit (no pacifiers) for the few hours beforehand. I know it's very hard to do but please just don't have them go into a comfy, sleep - leave them unswaddled or diaper change them! It might seem like it's unnecessary but for a shoot to go as smooth as possible (and you get to get the best photos possible) I truly recommend following this. This will ensure those squishy, sleepy newborn pictures!
I can't stress that it's so important to do your best to keep him awake.
Many parents come in saying "baby has been sleeping all morning, but trust me, he sleeps SO good this time of day!" only to have baby wake up, since they will be unclothed and unswaddled!
It will be at least 80 degrees in the room. Please keep in mind, if the room is not warm enough, baby will be awake and it won't be easy to pose them.
Sessions last between 2-3 hours, sometimes longer if baby is a light sleeper, or is hungry! The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse/bottlefeed off and on.
If you can, we would need the soothie pacifier the hospital sent you home with. It's the bendable, green/blue/orangish one, and won't leave marks. Even if you haven't used one, just for the 2 hours that I'm posing him/her usually really helps.
If you don’t happen to have one, I keep unopened soothies in my bag. However if you really prefer that we don’t use one, that’s fine as well!
For Mom & Dad
Mom & Dad you are a big part of the show. Photographing the connection between you and your baby is one of my all time favorite things. Just as they encourage in the hospital, skin to skin contact creates the most beautiful images.
Dads: if you prefer not to be shirtless I ask that you to wear a tight fitting v-neck t-shirt to wear with a good, snug pair of jeans.
Moms: Keep the color neutral and design simple. Also, rest assured, I aim to photograph using flattering angles and light to bring out the natural beauty in your family. If you're nursing, try to avoid eating anything spicy (burrito, pizza, hot sauce, etc) and gassy vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onion) that might upset the baby's tummy for 24 hours preceding the scheduled session.
Including older brother/sister(s) in your newborn’s portraits is the perfect way to document this fleeting time in your lives.
If you are planning to have sibling portraits done with your newborn, I suggest that you and your spouse or a relative/friend bring two vehicles and we will do the sibling, family and parent portion first, so the sibling can be taken home. It can be too much for small children to sit in 80 degree room, to keep things flowing as easy as possible I have found this works the best.
Sister(s): I provide a wrap that will act as the perfect top, or please bring along a snug fitting tank in a neutral color. I ask that girls hair be natural (or in braids) and free of bows, headbands, etc. Just as with mom, no nail polish please.
Brother(s): A snug pair of jeans and shirtless are preferred, please take a few moments to chat with your guy about this so he feels prepared for the session - though if he prefers not, a tight-fitting white t-shirt is fine.
I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby!
